Jumpy the Monkey was fond of buying the latest watches. One morning when he was reading the newspaper, he saw an advertisement about the launch of a new smartwatch that could check heart rate when worn.
He was fascinated and immediately left his house to go to the market.
On his way, he met Meenu the Goat. She saw him walk hurriedly and asked, “Jumpy, where are you heading so early in the morning?”
“Meenu, a new doctor watch has been launched. I am going to the shop to buy it,” replied Jumpy excitedly.
“Doctor watch?” asked Meenu, curiously.
“Yes, a doctor watch! I can’t explain about it just now. I’ve got to reach the shop first,” said Jumpy, leaving Meenu’s question unanswered.
Meenu, too, walked away wondering what Jumpy had been talking about.
Jumpy reached the shop and bought it for ₹700. The shopkeeper explained the features and functioning of the watch to Jumpy. “Not only does the watch show time, date and temperature, it also checks the blood sugar, blood pressure and heart rate of the person wearing it,” he boasted.
Jumpy wore the watch and left the shop. He couldn’t wait to show it off to his friends. On his way home, he saw them playing in the park. Instead of going to meet them, he strolled in the park and repeatedly checked time on his watch.
Tintin the Squirrel saw him wearing the bright and shiny watch and asked, “Jumpy, have you just bought a new watch? Is that why you are checking the time on it, repeatedly?”
Embarrassed, Jumpy replied, “Yes, Tintin, I bought this watch just now. It is a doctor watch and is different from all the other watches I own.”
“It looks technically superior. Can I see?” asked Tintin as she took a closer look.
Soon, Jumpy was surrounded by his friends as they all wanted to see his doctor watch. Jumpy boasted about the functions of the watch. He pressed the buttons and the colourful display impressed them.
“Jumpy, your watch looks amazing. Since it has such great features, why don’t you show us what it says about your health?” asked Kannu the Elephant.
“Sure. I’ll measure my blood sugar right away,” said Jumpy.
“How does it do that?” Kannu asked.
“If I press this button, it tells me my blood sugar,” said Jumpy and pressed it.
“Wow!” the animals exclaimed as they saw numbers changing on the watch.
The watch buzzed when it was done calculating. “Right now, my sugar is at 360,” said Jumpy with pride.
“360! That is way too high. Even my grandfather, who has diabetes, does not have such high blood sugar. We have to admit you to the hospital right away,” exclaimed Kannu.
Jumpy was not familiar with blood sugar levels and was taken aback when he realised his blood sugar was not at a normal level.
Tintin said, “Jumpy, I think you should check your blood pressure, too.”
Jumpy wasted no time and pressed the button to check his blood pressure. Everyone looked at his watch, which displayed 180–110. Tintin’s grandmother suffered from high blood pressure, so she knew what those levels meant.
“Jumpy, I think you should visit a doctor immediately. This is a warning sign, you better hurry,” she instructed.
Now, Jumpy was even more scared.
“If this is the case, check your heart rate, too,” suggested Larry the Giraffe.
Jumpy’s watch displayed a heart rate of 140 per minute.
Larry was shocked. “This is higher than normal, let’s go to the doctor,” he said.
Jumpy lost all hope and felt dizzy. Before he could make it to the doctor’s clinic, he fell unconscious.
The animals picked him up and ran to Dr Dobby’s clinic.
The doctor became worried seeing so many animals coming towards his clinic. He saw Jumpy was unconscious and immediately called for a stretcher and carried him inside.
“Please save me, doctor,” Jumpy muttered, opening his eyes.
“Children, please do not worry. Tell me what happened? Did Jumpy suffer an injury?” the doctor asked.
“No, doctor. But his blood sugar is at 360, his blood pressure 180–110 and his heart rate is at 140 per minute,” informed Kannu.
“Oh, that is serious! I’ll take him to the emergency room,” said Dr Dobby and rushed Jumpy in.
The other animals waited outside the door.
Dr Dobby quickly checked Jumpy’s pulse and found it to be normal.
Then, he checked his blood pressure, which again was normal at 120–80. The blood sugar figures also came out to be normal at 110. “Jumpy, you’re fine,” said Dr Dobby and informed his friends, too.
Jumpy jumped up on the bed when he heard the doctor say that, “Am I really fine, doctor?”
“Yes, I examined your health and you are fine. But, tell me who examined you before?” asked Dr Dobby.
“Doctor, Jumpy was examined by the doctor watch on his wrist,” said Kannu, softly.
Now, Dr Dobby understood the situation and smiled at them. “You should not believe everything you see or hear until it is thoroughly diagnosed by a doctor. The watch is just an electronic instrument, not a doctor. The numbers may not be accurate because Jumpy doesn’t know how to examine himself. Did he sit upright or sleep when checking his blood pressure and other readings?” asked the doctor.
Everyone nodded, including Jumpy They understood Dr Dobby’s advice. After this incident, Jumpy read the instructions carefully whenever he used something new.
