The monsoon had begun in Champakvan. To take advantage of the weather and earn some money, Damru the Donkey opened a shop selling umbrellas in the forest.

During the day, he sold his umbrellas, saying, “Protect yourselves from the rain. Big, small, tall or fat, no complaints. Bright umbrellas will beat the pain!” One day Jumbo the Elephant was passing by when he heard Damru calling out. Jumbo was very proud of his huge body and took very good care of it.

He went to Damru and asked, “Can you find me a big umbrella that will cover my entire body and protect me from getting wet in the rain? I don’t like getting drenched in the rain.”

Damru pulled out a big umbrella for Jumbo and gave it to him. Jumbo walked back to his house when suddenly it started raining. He opened his umbrella and walked with a smile. Meeku the Mouse stopped him on his way saying, “Jumbo, I have forgotten to bring my umbrella. Can you please drop me home in your umbrella?”

Jumbo made a face and said, “Meeku, suppose someday I forget to bring my umbrella, and it starts to rain. Do you think you will be able to do the same for me with your small umbrella? I suggest it would be better if you asked for a lift from someone your size,” and Jumbo walked away mockingly.

Jumbo’s attitude hurt Meeku, and he kept thinking about it the whole day. He decided to take revenge for this insult.

Meeku thought of a plan and entered Jumbo’s house at night through his window. He chewed on Jumbo’s umbrella and made big holes in it.

When Jumbo woke up in the morning, it was raining, so he picked up his umbrella to go to the fields, but as he opened his umbrella, the raindrops entered through the holes and drenched him completely.

Angrily, he looked at the holes in his umbrella and threw it away with frustration and went back into his house. He could not understand how his umbrella, which had been perfect the previous day, had such big holes in it now. Meeku was hiding close by and really enjoyed watching Jumbo getting wet in the rain.

Suddenly, Meeku saw his old enemy, Lily the Cat, passing by. She was carrying a colourful umbrella too. Meeku saw her umbrella and decided to do the same. He followed her to the beauty parlour. As she left her wet umbrella outside at the parlour’s doorstep and walked in, Meeku took the opportunity and quietly made three big holes in her umbrella.

Lily came out with her makeup on. She opened her umbrella and was about to walk away when the rainwater poured through the holes and spoiled her makeup. It made her look very scary. Meeku laughed his head off.

Meeku had started to enjoy this and ended up chewing umbrellas belonging to all the animals in the forest, including Baddy the Fox, Jumpy the Monkey, Blacky the Bear and Sally the Squirrel.

All their umbrellas failed them in the rains because of the holes. The animals were upset and concluded that the quality of Damru’s umbrellas was not very good. Finally, all the animals went together to Damru’s shop to argue about it. Meeku accompanied them to enjoy the show.

Damru explained that his umbrellas were perfect at the time of the sale, which meant that someone was causing this trouble deliberately. He suggested going to King Shersingh the Lion and complaining. All the animals agreed.

Meeku was confident his mischief would never be discovered, so he also went along with them. When the animals reached the palace, King Shersingh was strolling in the garden with his Minister, Cheeku the rabbit. The animals narrated the whole story. King Shersingh was surprised to hear such a strange story.

He did not understand the reason and did not know what to do.

He looked at Cheeku who looked at some of the umbrellas the animals had brought.

Cheeku had an idea and whispered something in the King’s ears and then turned to Damru and said, “Damru, all these animals are stupid. They are wasting our King’s time on such a trivial issue as holes in their umbrellas. So Damru, you better tell us who is the intelligentone who did not come to you complaining about a hole in his umbrella. King Shersingh would like to reward him for not wasting his time.”

Meeku could not restrain himself when he heard about the reward and said, “What can Damru tell you? I am that intelligent one who does not have even a single hole in his umbrella. Here is my umbrella; you can see it for yourself.”

Cheeku said to Meeku, “I already knew your umbrella would not have any holes because a thief never steals from his own house.” King Shersingh and the other animals were shocked and asked him, “What are you saying, Cheeku?”

Cheeku replied, “It is simple. Meeku is responsible for the holes in everyone’s umbrellas since it is only his umbrella that does not have a hole in it. He blurted it out in front of everybody in his greed for the reward. The holes in all the umbrellas are chewed by a mouse; they could only have been made by Meeku.”

The animals stared at Meeku, who admitted having done it.

King Shersingh did not have the heart to punish Meeku but couldn’t stop himself from laughing at his naughtiness.

Suddenly, there was a clap of thunder, and heavy rains started pouring. All the animals forgot about the holes in their umbrellas and opened them. They all laughed when they saw all kinds of holes in each other’s umbrellas. Even Jumbo could not stop himself from laughing.

All the animals got drenched under their umbrellas. Finally, Meeku asked for their forgiveness. They all forgave him and threw away their umbrellas, and danced in the rain.
